While the branding looks awesome, it is perplexing that they chose to unleash this flavor for a national non-chain branded release when so many other “safer” flavor options are available. Major Melon packaging is on point and is sure to draw some serious attention in the soda aisle (if you can find it). As far as refreshment goes, It’s not a very refreshing soda, unless your name happens to be Augustus Gloop. Like all incarnations of Mtn Dew, It’s slightly less gross when served over ice which helps to water down some of the candy element. The melon component is just too overwhelming, and tastes like pure green Blow Pop and Sour Patch Kid. I had hoped that Major Melon took a cue from Mtn Dew Maui Burst and gone with a more subdued and complimentary flavor profile that adds just enough unique character to the tried-and-true Dew magic formula. All the pink on the box (and cans) is offset by the bright green cartoon art of military watermelons, dog tags and fruit slices that an artist drew as Audrey II while on mushrooms.īut it turns out, Major Melon is neither of these things, which brings us to the all important… ![]() The Mtn Dew logo is a beautiful shade of pink that pops directly off some fuchsia themed camouflage. There’s few things in the world that can be deemed “perfect” and the packaging and graphics for Major Melon can be classified as one of these things. Well, enough with my 17 paragraph introduction for a soda review, let’s break it down, shall we? ![]() …but if you are into the diet versions, go crazy. Public embarrassment aside, this flavor is looking like it’s likely going to be hard to find in stores for a while. I opted to take the path of the hunter, which meant I had to fish one out all while looking like Winnie the Poo getting his ass stuck in his doorway. There were about 40 twelve packs of the diet version of Major Melon left completely untouched, but in the far back I managed to spy three of the regular good ‘ol corn syrup versions in the very, very back of the rack. Store shelves have been mostly empty in the soda aisle the last few weeks (the sodapocalypse?) but I was able to find it at the largest Wal Mart in Colorado which is a prestigious honor in itself. Now that we’ve gotten that disclaimer is out of the way, finding Major Melon in the wild happens to be a major pain in the ass. While watermelon soda has the nostalgic potential to bring me back to an island paradise, I will try to look at this new product from as much of an analytical standpoint as I can.) (So be fair, my outlook on the subject of watermelon soda is rater skewed to the romantic side of things. For the rest of the week, I would sit on the back porch, sipping it slowly while listening to my Blood Sugar Sex Majik cassette tape while admiring the moonlit bathed rolling waves. ![]() While the rest of my family was not impressed with this particular find, I enjoyed it. It was a pretty eye opening experience seeing rows of empty shelves and urban strife only a mile away from the idyllic island resort where everything was nothing but white beaches, scuba diving and Mai Tais. The first time I ever saw any melon flavored soda was when I found some Seagram’s Watermelon on an impromptu shopping trip to a local grocery store in St. It’s taken quite some time for watermelon soda to appeal to the American palate that has obediently crafted towards vanilla choices like Coke or Pepsi. It might sound like I’m being salty, but to be fair I’d love to sit in one of those just so I could watch a ton of old X Games footage and snort a few lines. And that’s what makes the latest flavor foray into Mtn Dew history such an odd choice: it’s pretty clear they are taking risks because they’ve finally exhausted every one of the last leftover ideas from the Dew pitch meetings. I will be the first to admit there’s probably not a huge public demand for watermelon flavored soda and the release of Major Melon is really only having to compete against the likes of Watermelon Crush and ICP’s Mad Rhymin’ Melon Faygo. ![]() ![]() ![]() And while some of these moments are fantastic to experience again many are just throwaway exposition. Two less ships for the Italians to have to deal with plus if Germany takes Southern France on G1, you won’t get convoy raided. Send a couple of planes to take out the French CA/DD in SZ 93. That will be one less ship for the Brits to try clearing out the Med and one less ship for what’s left of the Italian fleet to take out. Send 2 subs to kill that British cruiser in SZ 91. After that, it will be slow for Italy but you should be able to put up a good fight against the UK.Ī couple of suggestions to help Italy from Germany round 1. With any luck, Italy can scoop in 20 IPCs. Use your Libyan forces to take Tunisia, your Ethiopian forces to take Sudan and Somaliland infantry to take Kenya. Use your remaining transport to move forces from N Italy and combine with Albania to take Greece. That way you get your Med NO and Italy sorely needs that income. Okay, if there are any UK ships left, plus there is probably still the French CA/DD in SZ 93, you should use what is left of your navy plus your bomber to try and kill the remaining Allied ships. Plus your 6 infantry in the capital, your land forces in N Italy and Albania still intact.įirst, does the UK have ANY ships left? or did they all die in the Taranto raid? Did the CA in SZ 91 help clear SZ 96? Or did you just have planes for that one? You probably lost your fighters in the Taranto raid but still have your bomber in N Italy. So, assuming UK hits you at Tobruk and Taranto, what you have left is CA, DD, SS and Transport in SZ 95, Infantry/Artillery in Libya, 2 Infantry 1 Artillery in Ethiopia and 1 Infantry in Italian Somaliland. Do they also wipe out your Tobruk force as well? That is one thing I like to do as UK. Plus, if they get lucky dice, they could be left with the carrier and some planes. Still, I know that a lot of UK players out there just LOVE to do the Taranto raid. I think it makes England too weak in the Med and Italy still has some navy left in SZ 95. Personally, when I play the UK, I don’t like doing the Taranto raid. Aside from doing that, and like ItIsILeClerc mentioned at least threatening Sealion, if your UK player is bound and determined to wipe out the Italian fleet, I don’t think there is much you can do. I am assuming that you send a German fighter to South Italy to help the Italians. The downside of all of this, is that the UK can stack London massively from UK1 and still do ‘Taranto’, thwarting all Germany can do about London with a fake, save a dedicated sea lion from the start (which involves the buying of at least a CV as well)… The best you can achieve is that your UK opponents will come to fear your German surprises in the future and protect/cower accordingly thus giving Italy some breathing space. ![]() In case of a SL fake, the UK is free to pursue Italy from then on. Germany cannot afford to ‘keep all the options open’ GE2. Your barbarossa will be a little less threatening but the UK should be much more cautious because Germany can punish any misstep.īy GE2 however, your plans will (and should) be crystal clear to every1. IT2 can raid the London AB so the UK cannot scramble GE3 (5/6 times, I know…).Īn interesting alternative is to buy nothing at all GE1, to leave all options open, thus forcing the UK to protect London. ![]() ![]() Make sure you can buy 10TRS GE2 and turn around your wehrmacht to punish. Lots of UK players leave London terribly weak after they think to be certain you are going after Russia. Similarly, you could fake Barbarossa and launch a nasty surprise attack on London if the UK goes into the mediterranean too strong. You could try to slip in 1 or 2 TRS in your GE1 build to make the UK cower in London because of fear (after all, you CAN go wild if the UK doesn’t prepare properly), hopefully limiting the damage to Barbarossa with only so few TRS built. As far as I know there isn’t a single SL fake that does NOT also hurt the axis options in defeating Russia. ![]() ![]() Shoot a landscape or two, do a still life, and capture some macro compositions. If you’re new to focus stacking, test it out in a few different subjects and situations. Being able to simply select the images and stack them automatically is extremely convenient – and Affinity’s Clone tool makes it easy to tidy up any blurry areas. Making a focus stack in Affinity Photo is surprisingly simple! I’ve used other software to create focus-stacked images, but out of all the programs I’ve tried, Affinity is the most painless. How to focus stack in Affinity Photo: final words (My focus-stacked image, used for illustration purposes, required 4 images.) But if you fail to capture a necessary file, your final result will look blurry and the stack will be ruined. Affinity can easily handle any extra shots. If you’re just starting out, I’d encourage you to overshoot. Landscape photographers often only capture 2 or 3 images for a focus stack, but macro and product photographers may shoot 10, 20, or 30+ images, especially when working at high magnifications. The number of photos you need to take will vary depending on the lens, the distance to the subject, and the settings you use. (If you want to get the background in focus, feel free to keep going!) Keep moving the point of focus farther and farther away, and you’ll eventually cover the subject from front to back. Then adjust your lens so it’s refocused on that spot, and take another photo.Īt this point, you simply need to repeat the above process until you’ve captured sharp photos of the entire subject. Alternatively, review the image on the camera’s monitor zoom on in to see exactly where the image begins to fade out of focus. ![]() If your camera has a depth of field preview button, press it and check to see how much of the scene is in focus. So start by focusing on the part of the subject that is closest to you and take a photo. That way, when you open the images in Affinity Photo, the program can blend all the shots together to create a sharp image. ![]() The goal here is to capture a series of files, with each new image focused on a different portion of your subject. (This is usually done with an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens, though you can sometimes control the focusing mode in your camera’s settings menu.) Now that you’ve set up your camera and dialed in the correct settings, switch your lens to its manual focus mode. Only use focus stacking when absolutely necessary! So if you can get the required depth of field without taking extra shots, go that route instead. Realize that focus stacking is a time-consuming process. And set your white balance manually or with a preset don’t leave it on Auto! It’s important that all the photos in the series are identically exposed. ![]() (If you’re not confident you got the exposure right, go ahead and take a test shot.) Then, once you’ve dialed in your manual settings, don’t adjust them. ![]() Adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO so you achieve a good exposure. Consider doing a quick inspection of the entire frame before you begin to shoot. You don’t want to get halfway through your stack, then realize that you’ve failed to eliminate a distracting background element. So make sure your composition looks good before you start. Even a small amount of movement will cause problems!)īy the way: Most focus stacks take 3, 5, or even 20 images. (If you’re photographing a flower, wait for the wind to stop before you begin shooting. Moving subjects will complicate the process too much when you’re just learning the stacking technique – they can easily mess up an otherwise well-executed stack – so make sure your subject is completely stationary.
